Dear Parents / Guardians:
My name is Ian McKendry, and I am your child’s grade 7 or 8 homeroom teacher for the 2022-2023 school year at Centennial Secondary School. Mr. Woelber is the class’s French, Drama, and Dance instructor. Ms. Claxton will be the class’s Instrumental Music teacher and Mr. Mortaley is the grade 7/8 Learning Support Teacher. The classroom is located in room 230.
In place of paper agendas, our class has an online classroom (Google Classroom) and website with an online calendar where classroom and school information will be posted and updated regularly. Please visit and bookmark our website at this address:

In schools and the workforce, the use of technology on a daily and professional basis is commonplace. All students in the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) were given school email accounts with Google Apps for Education. These accounts are controlled by the HPEDSB secure online domain and are promoted as a safe and authentic way to develop responsible, career-oriented online skills. These email accounts can access all of Google’s online applications, including word processing, presentation software, and our online classroom (Google Classroom). Students will continue to use these accounts in secondary school, so becoming familiar with them in Grade 7 and 8 will help prepare them for navigating online learning in the future. Please encourage your child to login and use this account regularly, as they are now able to email their teacher questions or send assignments for feedback from home. As a reminder, their login for email is as follows:

A few key pieces of information about the class that parents / guardians should be aware of the first week are as follows:
I did not send home a class materials list, as the publicly funded school system will provide necessary classroom supplies. If students wish to bring their own pencil case, coloured pencils, calculator, etc. they may do so, but it is not necessary.
Cell phones are not allowed in class and must remain in lockers. Cell phones may be used during recess and lunch breaks. This rule applies to all Grade 7 and 8 classrooms and a separate letter will be sent home from the office with more information.
All students will have their own assigned CSS Chromebook. The Chromebooks must remain at school.
Students are expected to have a change of clothes for gym and clean footwear. If there are any concerns with getting these materials, please contact Mr. McKendry.
The class has a math assessment every Friday.
Students will be permitted to leave school property during second lunch / recess breaks. Permission must be given by parents / guardians for this to happen. A separate letter will be sent home with more information and student expectations.
All students must use a lock purchased from the school for $10. Students will be assigned a locker on the first day of school and be expected to start using this locker by the second day. Students may purchase a school lock from the main office on the first day.
The beginning of the school year is a busy and exciting time for everyone. It is important that students familiarize themselves with the class routines in the first week and ensure they log into their Google accounts and join any online classrooms. Please remember there is a CSS open house to visit classrooms and meet the teachers on Thursday, September 8, 2022 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Kind regards,
Ian McKendry
